Alana Tyson - It's what's on the inside that counts  Technique Mixte

I am interested in simple motions or marks being repeated until complex patterns and surfaces are created. This has manifested itself through many different media, but the majority of my art pieces have been linked by the phrase “It’s what’s on the inside that counts”. This phrase is quickly falling by the wayside in a society obsessed with outer appearances; I have always been much more interested in “interiors”.

Both of these ideas are seen in the large scale pieces constructed out of manipulated and hand-sewn lining fabric (exemplified by Embrace and Interiors, images 09-13). This work focuses entirely upon the “interior.” Inspired by coffin lining, chocolate boxes, and entrails of the body, the pieces are large scale, seductive, and visceral. These pieces give import to that which is normally hidden away, both literally as in the above references and as a metaphor for the “soul”. My goal with this series is to really push the scale so the piece leaves the realm of object and becomes an environment for the viewer.
