Luxembourg – The City of Short Distances represents a set of photographs of Luxembourg city taken by the photographers of the Photo Club of the European Institutions inLuxembourg (CIEL).

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, geographically situated in the heart of Europe has common borders with Germany, Belgium and France. People from a multitude of nationalities live here together; country and city build a multinational and multicultural center.

The theme of the exhibition, a slogan of the City of Luxembourg, is interpreted by the contributing photographers in various ways. One may refer to the geographic, economic and cultural situation and its existing infrastructure. Another may refer to the crossing of borders in a political, psychological, artistic, and emotional respects as well as the realization of common ideas.

The exhibitors belonging to different EU-Member States caught moments in their pictures revealing to the audience also the different aspects of photography.

Photography catches a fraction of a second, a fugitive instant. The before and after disappear – the moment stays. And it’s this moment that the photographer presents to us – either as an act of documentation; testifying and commenting, or as an artistic act; touching the spectator. From picture to picture, series to series the vision changes.

The works present the density of a city in a panorama perspective, the juxtaposition of housing and natural space, juxtaposition of the present and the past of a city, the new rent-a-bike-system véloh just inaugurated this year, impressions taken at the new terminal of Luxembourg’s airport, testimonies of a global economy, images of “today’s nomads” and consumer crowds in the shopping malls and much more … Multiple interpretations as an open book presenting diverse visions of a city and its short distances.

Exposition de photographie : Luxembourg – The City Of Short Distances
Luxembourg – The City of short distances représente un ensemble de photographies sur la ville du Luxembourg des photographes du Club Photo des Institutions Européennes à Luxembourg (CIEL).

Le Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, situé géographiquement au cœur de l’Europe, a des frontières communes avec l’Allemagne, la Belgique, et la France. Une population européenne de multiples nationalités y vit ensemble, pays et ville forment de cette façon un centre multinational et multiculturel.

Le thème, un slogan sur la ville de Luxembourg, est interprété de façon multiple. D’une part Il se réfère à la situation géographique, économique et culturelle et à la situation de l’infrastructure. D’autre part il se réfère au franchissement des frontières dans des domaines politique, psychologique, artistique, émotionnel, et surtout aux échanges et à la réalisation commune d’idées.

Les exposants venant de différents Etats-membres ont capté des instants dans leurs photos qui révèlent au spectateur les différents aspects de la photographie:

La photographie permet de capter une fraction de seconde, un instant fugitif. L’avant et l’après disparaissent – l’instant reste. Et c’est l’instant que la photographie nous présente – en tant qu’acte qui documente, témoigne, commente jusqu’à l’acte artistique afin de toucher le spectateur. De photo en photo, de série en série la vision change.

Les œuvres présentent , entre autres, la densité d’une ville en perspective panoramique, la juxtaposition d’espace habitation et nature, juxtaposition d’aujourd’hui et du passé, des impressions captées au nouveau Terminal A de l’aéroport, des témoignages d’une économie globale, des images des « nomades d’aujourd’hui » et des foules de consommateurs dans des centres commerciaux et beaucoup plus … De multiples interprétations tel un livre ouvert présentant les diverses visions d' une ville et de ses courtes distances.

The salon took normally place in the Grand Theater, this year's event was organized in a more industrial location, the former ateliers of Paul Wurth. A very good decision in my opinion, new spaces bring new challenges. The space is a 2 floor large exhibition space in the city. Here some impressions.

Happy to tell that I participate in the Salon CAL 2008 in Luxembourg. CAL is the Cercle Artistique  de Luxembourg organising each year a Salon  in Luxembourg. The CAL looks back on a long-year experience and tradition of organising art salons in Luxembourg. The "Cercle Artistique" was founded in 1893.

Kartą skaitydama vieno keliautojo aplankytų miestų aprašymus suklusau – autorius Vilnių – miestą, kuriame praleidau dvidešimt metų, – įvardijo kaip ramų, mielą, širdingą ir truputį beprasmišką, kaip „ir visi Pabaltijo ir Skandinavijos miestai“. Prancūzijos miestą Nant pavadino ribotos beprasmybės miestu. Tuomet pagalvojau – kokiais matais galėčiau įvertinti, pasverti Liuksemburgo miesto prasmingumą ar beprasmybę. Prasmes sau, tuo pačiu ir vietai, kurioje gyvenu, kuriu gi pati, žmonėms ir aplinkybėms padedant. Pamąsčiusi pradėjau projektą „Laiškai iš Liuksemburgo“...

This is a part of my letter considering a notes of one traveller. He desribed Vilnius, a city where I spent 20 years, as tranquil, lovely, hearty and „a bit senseless as all Baltic and Scandinavian cities“. Nant, French town, he named as city of „limited senselessness“. This extraordinary and very personal rating made me think about the sense of Luxembourg in my life and to start my project „Letters from Luxembourg“...

My theme is Babylon Buzz - So Much Talk.I got the first texts :

September, 18, 2008               I got a poem in Georgian from Teona (Hello Gila!!! This is part of my poem that I wrote for one of my pictures ''I have roots but I can fly'', I think it answers the subject of Babylon, so I just changed some sentences... Entire thing is made up of symbols, of course a poem in original language is a lot different, translation looses a lot of beauty and changes meaning a little bit...)

 მე მაქ ფესვები.                        I have roots
და მე მაქ ფრთები...                 but I also have wings
ცაში ავყარე თესლები,            I am not afraid to plant seeds into the sky
ჩავიხუტე მთები...                   because my mountains hug me (and hold me tight...)

-მიწას ნუ დაშლი,                     -so do not divide Earth...

Dear CI members & friends, you already know the kunstsilo and its artist group

 living, working, experimenting, sweating and bleeding on these 9 floors between the thick beton walls when creating their artwork ( I am a proud member ) - At the end of this month we will be having a new exhibition of recent work. The title of the exhibition is Babylon - Prolog 

My theme is Babylon Buzz - So Much Talk. I am creating a Mixed Media wall and as my title shows I need a lot of letters, words and text!

I am asking you to send me written letters, words or even text, a poem (a few sentences would be sufficient !) in your language (Arabic, Chinese, English, Georgian, Russian .... (related to Babylon - also in a large sense!!! Feel free to send what you think of - the original story or today's story or whatsoever in this context (if you don't want to write but express it in picture form, in a drawing or a graffiti or a painted letter ... a photograph. All is welcome! Do it in the way you want to contribute to this theme! it will be integrated in a mixed media work I am preparing.

What would be wonderful : to send me something as text file (if possible a Word file)  or hand written  in your language as a copy in an attachment as  image (jpg or tif). And if you have the time, give me a short translation in English or French or German or a short resume... (if the talk concerns a text or some words... )

For me curating is a creative process which is, I think, close to my work in the CULTUREINSIDE. project. The themes that I want to explore in an exhibition I organize become also part of my own artistic work. As member of the EU Photographers Club in Luxembourg C.I.E.L. being since this year responsible for exhibition and competition I found in this club a tremendous place allowing me to grow, share skills and gain experiences in organizing exhibitions. We are realizing each year a group exhibition which migrates outside and inside the European Institutions. The current exhibition project I am curating includes photographers with a wide range of cultural background. An exciting experience!
