Regine Freise
I love being able to look at the faces of people who lived hundreds of years ago.
Paintings allow us to do this. And for the last 150 years it has also been possible through photography.
However a painted portrait of a person fascinates me far more than a photograph.
I am filled with wonder every time I see how light and shadow created with brushstrokes on a canvas evolve into imaginary figures.
This is why I paint.
I often find the subjects for my paintings while I am on my travels. Photography helps me to record these images, which I later reduce or combine until I find the painting that lies deep within everything I have seen.
