Dominique Darnos

Born on 4th March 1948 in Montpellier (Hérault, France) in a family of painters and writers, Dominique Darnos already practiced dance, dramatic art and poetry when he was young.
Darnos, a self-taught person, began to paint in Avignon at 20 years old after a stay in Nouméa (New Caledonia) where he knew a painter from whom he became a trigger point. The first paintings (oil) signed “Darnos” have a surrealistic touch.
Then he gave up oil painting to begin ink painting in 1975. In some moments full of emotion, like the birth of his daughter Elodie, he switched from the aquatic world to the aerial world: His painting became fluent and spiritual.
His first great exhibition of oil and ink paintings in 1975 at the Festival of Avignon was extremely successful. Darnos definitely chose ink as his expression medium. Then he participated in exhibitions in Lyon, Paris and in the region of Var (Seynes), and also in Avignon and Saint-Estève.
Although his family was not united anymore, the artist entirely devoted to his art – he continued to paint and his remarkable creations were then selected to be exhibited among others at the Centre Culturel Berenger in Frédol. Recent exhibitions have attracted a lot of amateurs of this art in Saint-Paul de Vence and Nice.
In 2001 Darnos developed a new method to exploit his talent. He pushed the frames and borders of its paintings away, so that the medium became sculpture and wasn’t delimited in its dimensions anymore. Through this way and in relation with his new creations Darnos thus achieved to put the subject to paint into a sculptural perspective and give painting new dimensions… This was the birth of the ARTICULÉ DARNOS…

“I don’t paint the flower, I live in it”
Painting has always been for Darnos the best medium to express his emotions, his joy and sadness. The results are impressive. His style contains a surprising balance sense and he describes it himself as tachisme. His creations reach an incredible degree of perfection. They reflect power, sensibility, sensuality, and a subtle and mysterious influence that would come from the stars, human beings and things which would be animated by an unexplained source of energy. It is a poetic travel where figurative and abstract art are one and where macrocosm and microcosm are united in a spiritual firework display.
The viewer becomes really immersed in this idea of this both visible and imaginary world that lets him a feeling of enormous cosmic depth.

From tachisme to a dreamlike and phantasmagorical world

When human beings can’t freely move anymore, a question obsesses them: “How can I live at the present time?” When their freedom is restricted (for many years), the question is: “What to do?” Indeed, what to do of all this static and looped time?
Everyone hides in his mind to try to escape boredom.
More than the one who is in disciplinary isolation and who looses among others his visual bearings…
To solve this, they all have a solution:
 One of them gives vent to their pain (in silence) and we find him “lost” someday…
 Another one can break anything to express his pain, his existence, his profound discontentment…
 There is also the one who can hear God because he doesn’t have any other attention than his own solitude…
On the screens of prison walls, we can see ourselves from outside (with lucidity) to not definitely “go away”.
