christopher stone ( Spain )
To be born a sculpture needs love and dedication right to the end, direct or free carving is for me the closest one can get to the true art. Wax, clay, or bronze, often employing more than one person in thier execution tend to drift away from the original concept, cutting direct into the stone has no alternatives. People only seem to want two things, that, that is horribly beautiful, or that, that is recognizable, therefor one must prostitute ones art, or give in to the production of the mundane, i try, when not working on a direct commission to avoid all this criteria, and to create a feeling, a wish,or a dream, not a sequence of similar items, not a style, but a complete random exercise in creativity, my style is that ,i dont have a style. There are so many things we dont, wont, or cannot understand, why then when confronted with a piece of art do people need an explaination? We dont in our every day life explain why day is day and night is night, why must we? Let us look at the piece, love it or hate it, but dont try to understand it, i create because i must create, the results are only because they are.My task as a carver is to make the things i see in my mind, a work in stone may resemble another thing, or it may not, such resemblance is accidental and not relative.W ith what i do there is no differance between my original idea and the 3D work in stone.I do not carve what i see, i carve what i have in my heart, the beauties of apperance must not smother the beauties of thought. all my pieces are unique, more because i cannot do the same thing twice with the same energy of the original.
