Artist Statement 2011
If Art defines a cultural era, Ms. Mann paints a red carpet of high couture to redress the planet. Posh, flimsy garments are redesigned to dress an era of decisiveness and certainty. She has developed a cache of her own against a world racked with cruelty, war, and human suffering. Reconstructing world events, she paints a before and after picture of the situations in question. Her tools, camouflage and chicanery provide innovative alternatives to destructive weapons used by the leaders of genocide.
Fashionably speaking it can be said that Ms. Greene Mann has found the next bra size for tomorrow’s world.
Ms. Mann received her Master of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit during the turbulent times of the late 60’s. Again its the same issues, but now it’s 2011. Elevated resistance fuels the ongoing battle. Humour and imagination offset the harshness of this captured existence while harmony and peace seek a rebirth. Subconscious thoughts, dreams and unseen possibilities are transformed into new attainable achievements. Avatars and shell proof umbrellas save the day. It’s the birth of a new world.
“It’s a tough battle but someone has to do it”.
Artist Statement 2010
My language for painting evolved from years of “painting rooms”. This began at University when we were asked to do still-lifes. I painted all the still-lifes in the room in one painting. I became known for these “rooms” and would visit people’s houses, where I was welcomed as a guest. A file of images, the unknown placement of elements, form and color lead me to magical discoveries. How did the King Tut come into my work? Elements in my latest painting include Guell Park in Spain. The incongruenity is so engaging. Now I am a narrative painter. Often the stories are biographical and as human beings we share similar experiences of pain, love, universal subjects. My paintings bring me joy and others tell me they do too. They may be self healing but psychiatric sessions could never be so cheap. What better images could I hope to invite into the world. Now prose and poetry have been added to my language of creation. Joyfully I can share it with the world.
Weaving memories into new tales, scanning time in a non-predictable manner, my inner world is directed and guided by my Muse. I draw and paint following an intuitive sense. Form, color and placement provide relevance to the view of events. The objective world of form is left behind, accuracy is not my main intent, but how thoughts and feelings are seen and felt on the page. Sometimes the viewer may perceive that the painting has elements that are held in common. The conceptual context pertains to shared circumstances, and this is what and/or when the viewer is drawn into my world. Innocuous visions may influence elements of humour, horror or the like. Eventually the viewer may read or hear the partially factual or actual story. According to interviewed viewers, it doesn’t really matter if we all conceive the same truth, and the artist too, has decided this might be the case. It doesn’t matter. I admit though I do like to include the facts every now and then, just to keep the world updated
