Profile of Wilfried Schaus-Sahm

Wilfried Schaus-Sahm

painting - collage - photography - graphic
Dr. Susanne Höper-Kuhn, art historian, Dusseldorf.

„Schaus-Sahm is highly consistent in his artistic journey. Starting with paintings of ciphers in an informal structure and texture he reaches a form of expression that now can be described as Assoziagrammes. When black and white image is focused on seeing the sign, line, shape, without distracting detours, and it opposes the onslaught of our colorful world of images. Unusually, the framing. He places the canvas in a kind of glazed display cases, interpreted as an extension of the framing of his small-format works in a CD case. Based on the search of the artist after a spelling of reality by means of visual art photography is a necessary counterpart to the painting. Or, to quote Walter Benjamin : " The ignorant of photography will be the ignorant illiterate of the future". (from: Little History of Photography). In a selective perception process Schaus-Sahm photographed snippets of reality. Directly and immediately, he confronts us with the moment and thus leads back his artistic work on an item on the illumination of the reality at the moment of vision as a perception of the possibilities of our existence.

  • Dear Wilfried Schaus-Sahm
    Wonderful art!
Chinese characters are created like this, the first is based on the shape of things to create the pictograph. They wrote the text in the fur, and carved with words in the shells. After thousands of years evolved into modern Chinese characters. For example, people(人), mouth(口),door(门) rabbits(兔), bird(鸟) farm(田)

  • hallo sabine,

like your very unique form of collages. And it is always a good idea to go the conceptionel way. In this series you found so much wonderful and humorous variations of one subject.

  • Dear Francis,

like your work. Like me you concentrate on black and white, which is not simple but the effect is, that one gets a very defined message.
It is not easy to get a clear composition in the informel "abstract" painting, but you found your very own style. Great artist!

    Best Wilfried

  • Dear Coung Zhou,

like your very sensitive work. Especially that you are grounded in the long tradition of chinese calligraphy. I visited China in 1994 for six weeks and you can find some influences in my work, but I never would compare with that old masters that studied their lives long. My signs and symbols are more or less "free".
Wishing you all the best with your wonderful art.

  • Dear Carla,
thank you very much for your friendly comment on my work. I like the variety of handling the central theme of the femal body in your paintings.

    All the best

  • Dear Zhao,

thank you very much for your comment. I visited China in 1994 for six weeks, but I would not say that I will ever reach that perfection that the old masters of callygraphy achieve over a very long life. Nevertheless I use signs that come from very deep within and I believe that there is a vocabulary of signs in each of us. I simply let them come to my mind and find endless variations using the european background of informal art.
I am very thankful that you could find similarities to the far eastern art.
I really love you work too.
Perhaps the future will give us a chance to meet.

    All the best

  • Dear Stefan,
